Misc. Thoughts

a) In a spontaneous expression of love the other day I said to Luke, "You're my best friend." His rapid fire response: "yeah. you're definitely in my top ten."

b) It's not that I can't return my books on time, it's just that paying late fees is how I choose to support my local library.

c) My dentist told me not to feel too bad about my cavities. He said I have "soft teeth." I think that is the dental equivalent of being told you're not fat, just "big boned."

d) I cleaned out my office at work the other day. It was long overdue. I brought home a breast pump, a water pitcher, two reusable grocery bags, one of jo's plastic bowls, and EIGHT travel coffee mugs. So today marked DAY ONE of my new resolution to walk out of my office each afternoon with the same mug I took into the office. I failed.

e) My mom was trying out a cane she doesn't normally use. The rubber grip on the bottom is falling apart so she said to my dad, "Casey- I need to get a new rubber." He said (because he's her Hardy), "Why?" She poked at the floor and said, "Because I don't want to get the floor pregnant!"

PHOENIX!

Luke, Jo & I flew to Phoenix to meet a very special Heihn:

FINLEY!
And we were especially excited to see this one too:

Proud Daddy!

Jo was in love with all the new-to-her toys around. She followed Savannah around endlessly, fascinated by anything Sav was doing. Sav calls her "ha-na-na." It melts my heart just thinking about it!

This will be in one or both of their wedding slide shows!

sweetest little fingers & toes

We love our Sav & Fin- and matt & katie of course were most hospitable- love you guys!!!

Baggage

I got baggage. Her name is Jo:

So when we flew to Phoenix I filled out a baggage tag & tied it to her jeans. For safety.

I love this picture

I like Katie, Matt & Finley in the background!

You have to be pretty hip

Hunter

I don't know who on this planet can appreciate this as much as maybe kimberly or katie...but my in-laws got this:

A DOG! Named Hunter!

He is precious

This family SMITTEN over Hunter! This dog is living the life. He's got a toy collection valued in the triple digits (which is probably two digits more than the toy collection of any of the middlebrooks children), Dick is sleeping with the dog, Sara is calling him cuddlebum, snugglebug, and buggy (her most endearing terms) and between lex/naomee/gillian the dog is walked eight to ten times per day. I guess it's because he is so stinking cute.

Post 20 mile Pine State

Saturday was our last 20 miler before the marathon. I planned our route to end at Pine State on Belmont...the most amazing plate of fried breakfast food I've ever beheld. I felt a lot of anxiety at being in charge of the route, so I carried our list of turns while we ran:

We met at SE 37th & Belmont. What do I see when I pull up? A honey bucket. This was a very good omen.

Anna & I ran 4 miles through Laurelhurst, then KP joined in:

You can't tell, but here we are at the top of Mt. Tabor, about 8 miles into the run.

Then back to Pine State to pick up CB, who was looking especially bushy-tailed and refreshed in comparison. The rest of us ate goo. Which under normal circumstances I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It is like swallowing berry flavored snot. BUT it has caffeine, and some other sort of magic that I buy into, so at mile 11 it seemed like a good idea.

Can you tell where we work?

FINISHED! 20 miles done & over with.

And on to the best part...Pine State

THIS was a feast.

In more detail...it was bacon & fried egg on fried chicken on a biscuit covered in GRAVY. For this, I run.

Grandpa Dave

Ten years ago today, Luke's Grandpa Dave passed away. On earth we mark 9/15/00 as the day he died, but I think in heaven that must be more like his birth day. He was a wonderful man, alway smiling and laughing about something. He was much loved and will be much remembered.

Love Letters

Imagine my surprise when I found THIS
on my daughter's rear end tonight while changing her diaper!
It's a little note to Savannah from Grandma. We'll be in Phoenix soon & Grandma figured this was cheaper than the cost of a stamp. Thanks Sara, for Jo's first tattoo :)

Sept. 4th: Long Run In Pictures!

Saturday was a conglomeration of a run- CB wanted to run 10, I needed to run 18. I ran from PSU nearly all the way back home- to Sellwood at Oaks Bottom, then back to PSU, picked up CB & we ran up Terwilliger to Fred Meyer & back. Since I was alone for the first 8.5 I decided to take pictures with my phone along the way...
The route:

Elevation:

Mile 3: my all time favorite view on a run: the top of the Sellwood bridge

Mile 3.5: Sellwood Pool- I took this for nostalgic reasons. Jack & I took swim lessons here as kids & we ALWAYS got a sno-cone right in this exact spot-

Mile 4: Overlooking Oaks Bottom, on the Sellwood Bluff- you can see Oaks Park & downtown from here

Mile 5.5: Possibly the only remaining all-metal playground in Portland- at the south end of Willamette park. We used to feed the ducks here, and get the backs of our legs scorched going down the slide

Mile 12: I forced CB to pose by the totem pole at Chart House- a compliant little runner, she is.

Victory! Well, not really- we still had about 7 miles to go. Bleh. Overlooking Portland, also at Chart House

THIS was to be the reward- a Pine State Biscuit at the Portland Farmers Market. Sadly when we got back down there the line was over 30 minutes long!

Not in the mood to wait that long for food I opted for some knockyoursocksoff deep dish pizza from Via Chicago. I highly recommend it! The crushed tomato on top is the best part.

Xband!

Ok, this is so stinking cool- my cousin INVENTED this crafty wallet system called the Xband. He just launched his website, which I totally get a kick out of. Check it out:

WAY TO GO BEN!!!

Insult to Injury

Injury:

(that would be the UNAUTHORIZED installation of a crooked, bright yellow Oregonian mailbox on my grape arbor. Upon complaint to the Oregonian, I was promised it would be immediately removed and carefully!)

Insult:

(this is insult twofold: 2 weeks later the mailbox has not been "immediately and carefully removed," and on top of that, as you can see, the paper boy isn't EVEN PUTTING THE PAPER IN THE BOX!!)

OSF: oregon state fair

We hit up the OSF last week. It's like a million miles south. We took Kimberly for entertainment on the long car ride. We had to take two or three rest breaks, stop for 1 meal, get the oil changed and tires rotated, sleep over at a motel 6, and then FINALLY we arrived in Salem. Ok, maybe it took 40 minutes but anywhere south of Wilsonville feels like a road trip to me. It was worth it. Why?
ELEPHANT EARS!

I generously shared 5% of the elephant ear with luke & jo.
Jo scouted out the piggies

...which you can buy. So they can become your pet, I assume.

3 of my lovely sisters

Jo was disappointed because the carnie wouldn't let her on the roller coaster. TOO SHORT he said. HEIGHT FAIL.

So uncle jack offered to let her ride on his shoulders. He know how it feels to be rejected by carnies on the basis of height.

and Patty scared the daylights out of Jack by having her pic taken with a snake. Jack couldn't even watch. He started sweating, shaking, and had to evacuate lest he start to cry.

So now I know what I'm getting Jack for Christmas. A python.

Pickpocket

No Throwing Food!

Jo puts unwanted food in her discard pile...my floor. We're trying to teach her NOT to throw her food, and she tests us by dangling food out over the floor. She'll look you straight in the eye, raise her right brow & mug until she finally decides to obey. Then she applauds her efforts.

Snark.

A few weeks ago I put an ad up on Craigslist for a new caregiver. We found one, by the way- and she's amazing. Anyhow, I got this very interesting response, and couldn't help but reply. I know it was snarky, but I couldn't restrain myself. See below:

The original email to me:
wHENEVER I CHECK THE CRAIGSLIST ADD I GET TO SEE YOUR ADD.
i TRULLY BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE STILL ON THE 80S,NO ONE WHO HAS CAR,INSURANCE AND IS RELAIABLE WILL WORK FOR THIS KIND OF MONEY.
bESIDES THAT YOU ARE REQUESTING TOO MUCH,ARE U EXPECTING A BABYSSITER HOUSE KEEPER AND CAREGIVER AND ALSO A CHOFFEUR FOR 9/H?
u MUST BE KIDDING?
aRE U EXPECTING HER TO WEAR A DIAMOND ROLEX AND DRIVE A PORCHE TOO?
pLEASE LET ME KNOW IF U FIND SOMEONE BECAUSE IN THIS CASE I WOULD LOVE TO HIRE HEROFFERING 12H
THANKS
DREAM ON......

My response:
Dear Ilton,

Thanks so much for your interest in the nanny/caregiver job. Unfortunately you did not get the position. We received an overwhelming response, and we were so lucky to find someone who is an excellent match for our family. Again, thanks for your interest. It seems like you have some great qualities and a winning attitude- I'm sure the job you're looking for will be right around the corner! Best of luck to you in your career!

Thank you,
Michelle

1 Pic=2 Ways To Be Old

This year I will turn 30. Which is not old, in my book (the one I wrote at 29, not the one I wrote at 15). However getting glasses AND a root canal in the same week do make me feel a bit old. Hmph.

PS- At least 40% of the reason for my face looking as it does is because I'm trying to show you both my glasses and my tooth. The other 60% can be attributed to genetics. Thanks Mom.
